About the Role

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, Creating, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, the Associate Program Officer:

  • Administers internal assessment committees of grant programs to individual artists, groups, and arts organizations, according to established policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to the development and modification of initiatives and programs to respond effectively to the needs of Indigenous artists.
  • Works to ensure access for Indigenous artists and arts organizations to Council programs and services.
  • Assess the eligibility of applicants and projects and follows-up as needed.
  • Chairs and participates in working groups and committees.
  • provides assessments in internal committees;
  •  Coordinates logistics and carries out administrative support for internal assessment committees.
  • Provides general information and support to applicants and the public regarding eligibility and information about the program.
  • Prepares eligibility and result letters for review and approval reviews project expenses, financial data, final reports and financial statements
  • Plans and conducts public outreach and information sessions.
  • Contributes towards the development of policies and the improvement of procedures, specifically for Indigenous artists, organizations and communities.
  • Supports Program Officers in the peer assessment process by taking notes and preparing draft reports.
  • Performs general administrative and other related duties.

Education

  • An undergraduate degree in arts practice or in arts administration, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience related to the responsibilities of the position.

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience directly related to the principal responsibilities of the position.
  • One (1) year of experience in the areas of Indigenous arts and culture.
  • Experience in various artistic disciplines would be an asset.
  • Experience analyzing financial and statistical data.

Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis arts and culture.
  • An understanding of the interrelationships and complexities of the artistic milieu, including the relevant organizations and institutions.
  • Knowledge of the current discourses in Indigenous self-determination, specifically as it relates to arts and culture
  • Strong knowledge of one or more artistic disciplines.
  • Knowledge of the current state of the arts in Canada and of trends and new developments in the arts, including more recent forms such as digital arts.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, team-working, organizational and leadership skills.
  • Excellent judgment, problem-solving, time and priority management.
  • Ability to perform analysis of financial statements and statistical data.
  • Ability to synthesize information and write reports.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and to identify and respond to issues.
  • Ability to facilitate consensus and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to chair and manage committees.
  • The ability to speak an Indigenous language would be an asset.

Bilingual Requirements

This position requires the use of both official languages. The requirements in the second official language are:

  • An Intermediate level in reading comprehension (B)
  • An intermediate level in writing (B)
  • An Intermediate level in oral (B)
